Extension Reading: MKV (Matroska)

MKV aka Matroska is an open standard free container format. It is a multimedia container that can hold multiple video, audio, image and subtitle tracks in one file. Practically this means that it is possible to put entire movie with multiple sound and subtitle tracks, chapters information and movie thumbnail into single Mastriska Media file. The movie quality in MKV format can be almost equal with DVD. That’s why MKV format is widely used right now.

Different to video or audio encoding format like DivX, XviD or MP3, Ogg, MKV is just a format that provides covers for video codec. It is just a container, the frequently used AVI, VOB, RM etc are container as well.

A range of software has native Matroska support. Those include media players such as MPlayer, VLC, ALLPlayer, foobar2000 and PowerDVD and media centers such as Plex, Boxee, PS3 Media Server and XBMC, and the web browser Google Chrome.
